The photo collection of the painter Lóránt Méhes (“Zuzu”) portrays the personalities and events of the Budapest alternative art scene from the beginning of the seventies. The images arranged into scrap books in chronological order can be called social albums on the analogy of family albums, and present a composed, personal, visual imprint of the style of living of the nonconformist community.

The Theater in ‘der Wende’ collection preserved by the Academy of Arts in Berlin documents changes in theatres in the former GDR as well as in cultural politics, covering the period from the autumn of 1989 until mid 1990s. The collection includes twelve theatres from the GDR, but it focuses mostly on (East and West) Berlin and Brandenburg, and three newly emerged theatres, in the context of the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification. The timeframe includes the transformation period initiated in some theatres prior to 1989 until their dissolution or those that completed their transformation at the beginning of 1990s. The materials were selected to showcase the uniqueness of the changes that affected theatres, an institution which was directly monitored by the surveillance mechanisms of the regime.

The Theatre Association „Gardzienice” – the Centre for Theatre Practices was founded as a theatre and a performance group by Włodzimierz Staniewski in a small village Gardzienice near Lublin (Poland) in 1977. Since then, it has become one of the best known examples of experimental theatre, linking musicality, music, performance and close relationship between the artists and the audience.
The Theatre, apart from producing new performances, is also very active in the field of artistic education – in 1997 it started the Academy of Theatre Practices, where students from different humanistic fields can develop their animation and performance skills.

The Theatre Performance Documentation collection traces its roots back to the 1960s, to the work of the Academy of Arts (East Berlin) and the GDR Union of Theatre Producers. The aim of this process of documentation was the exchange of artistic experiences and work among theatre professionals. Apart from offering a differentiated look at theatre practitioners’ professional history and creative processes, the documentation also shows how contemporary society is mirrored in theatre productions. The collection is significant not only for providing valuable and unique documentation of the creative working processes in GDR theatres, it also captures shifting approaches towards the regime, in particular starting in the 1980s.
