The Großhennersdorf environmental library, founded in 1987, and its accompanying Civic Movement Archive stand as a testament to the opposition in the GDR occurring outside of large urban areas. Due to its proximity to both Poland, and the ČSSR, transnational influences are readily visible.
The Berlin Archive "Song and Social Movements" collects reports from the GDR singer- and songwriter movement from the 1960s onwards. The materials that are managed by a non-profit organization show how difficult it can be to investigate cultural opposition between the extremes of supporting and opposing the state.
The archive documents the life and art of Pál Deim, an outstanding representative of Hungarian neo-avant-garde art during state socialism from the late-1950s. Deim was active in a great variety of genres and asserted lasting influence on painters that challenged socialist realist principles and state art.
